Canada's Leading Index Rises Despite Housing Retrench

Statistics Canada's index of leading economic indicators remained higher in August, with the 0.5% increase matching the average of the previous two months.
Economists expected the leading index to rise 0.6% from the previous month.
Housing continued to show signs of weakness, with manufacturing activity was seen picking up.
The agency noted that new orders for durable manufactured goods continued to strengthen, rising 5.2%
Household spending was mixed, with declines for the housing-related components and increases for other durable goods.
Furniture sales slumped as existing home sales demand dwindled.
In a separate release this morning, the agency reported that total retail sales slumped 0.1% for a second straight month in July.
